The New York Court of Appeals Announces that the February Bar Exam Will Be Online as Covid-19 Lingers, Joining Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and California

The New York Court of Appeals announced on October 21, 2020 that because the threat posed by the pandemic has not abated sufficiently to conduct in-person testing of large numbers of applicants the Court has determined that New York will administer a remote bar exam in February 2021.
Details concerning the eligibility criteria and registration process for the February bar examination will be announced by the Board before the application filing period is scheduled to open on November 1, 2020.
According to the New York Court of Appeals, 5,150 people successfully completed its bar exam online in Oct. 2020. 10,071 people took it in person in July 2019.
At least four other U.S. jurisdictions - Maryland, Pennsylvania and Connecticut and California have decided to also conduct a remote examination.
In California and under the direction of the California Supreme Court, the exam will be administered primarily online. Those approved for testing accommodations that cannot effectively be provided remotely and those with extenuating circumstances that prevent them from taking the exam online will be accommodated at limited in-person testing locations.
