The Low Pass Rate of the Florida Bar Exam for July 2022 For First Time Takers and For Repeat Takers - Why It Is Time to Get a Florida Bar Professors’ Bar Exam Tutor

October 4, 2022

Two weeks ago, the Florida bar exam results for July 2022 came out and, as we know, it was a low pass rate for first time takers and for repeat takers.

The pass rate for first time takers was 64.4%, down 8% from 71.6% for the July 2021 bar exam. These statistics only reflect first time takers. The repeat taker pass rate was much lower, considering that many of the applicants were repeat takers.

Of the 2,794 applicants who took both Part A and Part B of the General Bar Examination in July 2022, 1,432 (51%) passed. Of the 186 applicants who took Part A only, 102 (55%) passed. Of the 231 applicants who took Part B only, 84 (36%) passed.

As we can see by the law school statistics, there were some schools who did better than the average of first time takers. But, the law schools did not do as well in this bar exam than last years’ bar exam. For example, FIU’s first time taker pass rate was 81%, down from 88.8% last July. The University of Miami’s pass rate was 72% down from 82,5% last year and the University of Florida’s pass rate was 78.7%, down from 81.3% last July.

Unfortunately, there were law schools that did not do very well. Schools like St. Thomas (60.5%), Florida Coastal, which is now closed (30.8%), FAMU (52%), Nova (54.5%) and Barry (49.2% - a full 10% lower than last year) had a little over half of the students to pass the bar exam and could not even come close to the total average of all Florida law schools. Regrettably, those schools did not meet the criteria of what the students expect from their law schools and brought the average down for Florida.

In addition, we still don’t know how Cooley Law School in Tampa fared, although we know that Cooley Law School students traditionally do not do well on the bar exam.

The out of state applicants had a 53.6% pass rate, below the average of Florida law schools.

Although the Florida Board of Bar Examiners does not release the repeat taker pass rate, we know that if the first time taker pass rate was 64%, and the overall pass rate was 51%, the repeat taker pass rate was much lower.
