California bar exam results for July 2024 have been released.



Repeat takers accounted for 32% of all candidates who sat for the bar exam.


The overall pass rate was 53.8%,

The first time taker pass rate was 68%.

The repeat-takers pass rate was 23.5%.


California ABA Schools – First-Time Takers 81%; Repeat Takers 34%

Out-of-State ABA Schools – First-Time Takers 75%; Repeat Takers 28%

California Accredited (not ABA) – First-Time Takers 36.5%; Repeat Takers 15.8%

Unaccredited Fixed Facility – First-Time Takers 25%, Repeat Takers 4.8%

Unaccredited Correspondence – First-Time Takers 30%, Repeat Takers  13%

Unaccredited Distance Leaning – First-Time Takers 20%, Repeat Takers 11%

Others – First-Time Takers 31%, Repeat Takers 21%

All Applicants – First-Time Takers 68%, Repeat Takers 23.5%

The MBE mean scaled score have been low for the past few bar cycles, especially for repeat takers. The February bar exam draws a larger proportion of takers who have already failed the exam at least once and who are statistically more likely to fail again than first-time takers. Test takers who have previously taken but not passed a bar exam tend to show lower performance on the MBE than first-time test takers, and the majority of this February’s test takers nationwide were repeat takers.
