October 9, 2021
Over half of the bar exam results for July 2021 have been released. Approximately, 29 states have released its bar exam results. Unfortunately, we continue to see how dismal the repeat takers pass rates are. It is truly a horror story.
It is clear from the data that repeat bar takers fail at a rate of 70-85% every time they take the bar exam. The repeat taker pass rate ranged from only 12% in Washington to Wyoming at 50%. Florida, the only non-UBE state to release its results, indicated that only 21% of the repeat takers passed the bar exam.
Take a good look at these statistics for repeat takers:
Washington: 12%
Alabama: 16%
Illinois: 17%
Vermont: 18%
Oklahoma: 19%
Missouri: 20%
Florida:21%
Colorado: 22%
North Dakota: 23%
New Mexico: 26%
Indiana: 27%
Iowa: 28%
Wisconsin: 33%
North Carolina: 34%
Arkansas: 34%
West Virginia: 38%
Montana: 42%

It would be interesting to dig even deeper into these statistics and determine how many times these repeat takers were taking the bar exam. We see from some of the statistics posted, that the best chance to pass the bar exam as a repeat taker is probably the 2nd or 3rd time taking the bar exam. After that, the repeat taker pass rate declines dramatically.

Test takers who have previously taken but not passed a bar exam tend to show lower performance on the MBE than first-time test takers, and the majority of this February’s test takers nationwide were repeat takers.
