California Releases Its Results for the February 2021 Bar Exam

May 9, 2021
On Friday, the State Bar of California released the results from February’s exam, granting passing grades to those who scored 1390 or above. February’s test was also the second to be administered online.

A total of 3,098 applicants took the bar exam in February, and 1,151 of those reached the score threshold necessary to pass, for a passing rate of 37.2%.

State bar officials said that the February testing group was smaller than a normal February group due to the large size of the October exam and their high pass rate at the earlier exam.

As is typical, a majority of the February exam applicants were repeat takers, although at a lower percentage than average (approximately 60 percent compared to the typical 70 percent).

The February 2021 General Bar Exam preliminary statistics were:

Completed the exam: 3,098 applicants
First-time applicants: 1,227 (39.6% of total)
Pass rate for first-time applicants: 53% overall
Repeat applicants: 1,871 (60.4% of total)
Pass rate for repeat applicants: 27% overall.

Of the 432 attorneys who completed the Attorneys’ Examination, 247 (57.2%) passed.
